Preparing for Advent

With the hustle and bustle of shopping, decorating our homes, and parties to go to, we often forget the real reason for the season. This year during Advent, I plan on not doing any shopping on Sundays no matter what! I want to take this day in, relax and reflect on the days scripture readings and finally light our candle at dinner time.
Also, as a special observance of Advent, I am going to visit the Blessed Sacrament each Monday.
And thirdly I am going to confession. I always put off going to confession, but I always find myself so renewed when I finally do it.

Dear God, thank you for this season of Advent that helps us to prepare for the coming of Christ at Christmas. As we read the Bible and light a candle, may excitement for Christ’s coming burn in our hearts. Amen

  3. Hi Marissa! We had Advent devotions for years when our kids were still home, not just on Sundays. (High school and basketball practices, games and dating pretty much ended them, but it was lovely while it lasted. A florist always ordered in pink and purple heather for me to pick up the day after Thanksgiving and we would make our Advent wreath from that. I spent hours trying to come up with age-appropriate short devotions as there were so few books on the subject at that time. I must try to find my old pictures of them. I think I even have the song sheets I printed out for the carol we'd sing each night. I had Christmas stickers for them to decorate them. And after scripture, a carol and prayer, they'd blow out the candle for the week and I'd read them a children's Christmas book by the light of the Christmas tree. Such good memories there. Your post and picture brought it all back to me. You expressed lovely thoughts in your post.

  7. Hi Marissa,

What a wonderful way to put it: 'the reason for the season'. I totally agree with you. Very thoughtful words. We tend to get caught up with the commercial side of things. In reality, don't we really all have what we need and more?!

    Have a great weekend.
