A conversation with a photographer

I had a very interesting conversation with a really nice lady I met while patiently waiting for a bird to come fly by a feeding station at Estero Grande Birding Center. She mentioned that she was from a national magazine and was there trying to get a good shot of a Teal cinnamon duck. She had a camera and tripod suited for professional photography! She started showing me pictures she had taken earlier that morning.. I instantly fell in love with the clarity of her photos. Our conversation went like this..

" I love how clear your pictures look maybe I should convince my husband to buy me a camera like yours"... She quickly looks away from her camera and tells me ..."Honey do you know how much this camera and all these lenses cost?...

Me.. "Not sure" her.. "Well lets just say a price of a new car honey" I nearly passed out!!
HOLY SMOKES!!!   Me.. "A new car really?"
Her.."Oh yes dear a new car probably around in the same range of a Toyota corolla"
Me.." Uhh-I think I'll stick to my old faithful Cool pix Nikon
I just need more photography practice"
  Her..."keep practicing honey"

There is no way I am spending that kind of money on a camera. (but then again she is a professional photographer, and I am not) I'll spend it on my home not on a camera.. What about you?.. Do you have an expensive camera that costs as much as a brand new Toyota?

  1. No way. Mine was less than $200. That was an expensive one for me. Just keep practicing and take lots and lots of photos. If you take 10 of the same thing, one is bound to come out.

  4. I am a professional editor for online news and I only have a Nikon Cool Pix too...works great! But I am a bit jealous when I see the neat pictures on all the blogs I read, so I think a great camera does make a difference.

Love all your sweet bird photos!!!

  5. I use a relatively inexpensive camera and then edit with picasa or picmonkey. My photos suit my purposes. My dad has invested more into his camera, and his photos are far better than mine.

I think that the question of how much to spend on a camera is a matter of personal priorities.

  6. I guess if it is your profession and you make a living from taking photos then you gotta have a pretty good camera. I could never spend that much. All your bird photos look pretty darn good to me. Practice makes perfect. Have a great rest of the week, Tammy

  7. I think your bird pictures are fantastic! I don't have an expensive camera either. I keep thinking I'll upgrade, but there's always something else more important to use the money for. Keep taking those pictures. I find the more I do, the better I get.

  12. Well I think you take amazing pictures. They are sharp and the color is beautiful. I'm still afraid to put our camera on manual. My husband keeps trying to teach me but I prefer to do the writing and him the photography. Even with a new nice camera we can't seem to get the quality we're looking for. We need to take classes but who has time?

  13. Thanks Dewena you are too kind! There are awesome pictures on blog land that would put me to shame!!.im keeping this camera for as long as I can, I just hate all the charging ! The next one I'm making sure it's the kind you plug into your wall.

  14. Beautiful pictures Marissa, I use a canon HD 16.0 (I think) I just got it for Christmas I have no idea if I 'm using it correctly I just point and shoot. My one and only complain is it uses regular batteries, my fault I had 30 days to return it to upgrade it or get my money back, but I didn't so now I carry extra batteries with me and live with the fact that every time I download my pics to the computer I forget that the camera is hooked up and by the time I remember batteries are dead!

  18. No, I do not, nor will I ever. I think that lady could justify it since it was how she makes a living. She can even write if off! LOL! For recreational use, my little Sony is just fine. I do like seeing beautiful photos though and sometimes wish I had a better camera, but I'm not going into debt over it!

  19. Your photos are lovely, Marrisa and your camera did a fine job.

She is a professional and makes her living that way, so that justifies the expense for her. My camera would be an old clunker to her Toyota Corolla!!!

  20. Hi there, I have a Nikon and love it; I would like another lens but no, I would not pay that much. We do need two newer cars and lots of home improvements but paying that much for a camera-no way. Love your pics by the way.

  22. I have a Nikon and would like to add a macro lens but that costs was less than a new car. Maybe the price of a tricycle. The bird pictures are great! Thanks for stopping by a leaving such nice comment on my garden, I do spend hours out there during the summer. Laura

  23. No. I don't think I'd want to work with those great big lenses either. I'm all about keeping it fun and cheap. Ha! What a great and informative conversation you had and shared. I love listening in on conversation.

  24. So funny!!! I can't even imagine! I can't even get myself to buy one new lens for my camera because they are about 500 dollars,,,can't imagine the price of a new car!!!!

And are those your bird pics? They are fab!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Not a car, but I did spend too much on the one I did buy.

I think the best thing I have learned in photography is to use a tripod whenever I can. Any shake whatsoever makes the photo more blurry. And most of the time you don't even know you are moving slightly. Even just pressing down the button moves the camera, so I'll use the timer function on the camera and put it on the tripod if I want to make sure the photo is extra sharp, that way I'm not touching the camera when the shutter goes off.

Great bird photos though. That sounds like a fun place to take photos.

  26. No.... but, I have to confess to wishing for one sometimes!! ;) I hope she makes a good living with hers; it sure looks like it COULD take exceptional photos. Yours are very good, too, Marissa!! wishing you and yours a wonderful Easter. blessings ~ tanna
