Dear hummingbirds,
I don't know what I have done to alienate all of you
Please help me
understand.
I went out in search for the prettiest feeder, looked for the perfect spot to feed you,
bought the most expensive red nectar there was
and when that got old, and full of ants
I made my own sweet concoction.
I changed the sugar water
once a week, and still
no signs of you.
I have googled and binged my fingers off
and done just about everything
recommended.
I come by this window and take a peek
every
morning, afternoon and evening and still I don't see
NOTHING
NADA
ZILCH
ZERO
No signs of you anywhere...
I am waiting anxiously for you to come take a sip
I know once you discover this cozy spot
you will love it!
So,
I am begging you to come fly by take a sip, flap your wings, and enjoy your new feeder
Pleazzzzzzzz
I was looking forward to your great photos; I guess I'll have to be patient, too. Hopefully the hummers will show up soon!
ReplyDeleteHa, funny Kristi...
DeleteI love those sweet birds but we are so hot dry and windy here that we only see them on occasion! I have lived your pain...I have the ants too. Bummer! Keep trying!
ReplyDeletethanks Gina!!!
DeleteWe love them too. You do have to get the feeders out at the very first of the season. We have noticed that ours aren't coming as often but think it's because there's so much else for them to feed on now. And with all the beautiful blooms in your area, I'm sure they have a banquet right now. Keep it up. Do you have some pretty flowers planted in a basket near the feeder that might draw them?
ReplyDeleteYes, I have a fire bush just for them. and the feeder is right next to it..I guess I just have to be patient....
DeleteHi Marissa,
ReplyDeleteBeautiful feeder, lovely spot...be patient they will come. Have you got enough of sweet smelling flowering bushes around, like, honeysuckle or jasmine? A blogger friend asked me if I had hummingbirds from all the honeysuckle we have? And we do!
Poppy
Thanks poppy!! I do have all kinds of hummingbird bushes... I guess I need to be more patient. :)
DeleteI have always loved Hummingbirds! I used to put up feeders in Ca. and then we'd get ants or yellow jackets so I just planted flowers instead. I've continued to do that here but hardly ever see any. Hope yours return quickly from their winter vacation.
ReplyDeleteHugs, Noreen
Yes, I have been making this sweet sugar water.. almost every 3 days.. they say that the hummingbirds don't like old water...
DeleteI feel your pain, Marissa! We tried that last year, too. No luck. Not sure what we were doing wrong. =( Hope you get yours to come soon. blessings ~ tanna
ReplyDeleteOhh Thank you Tanna!!! They will come soon, I hope!!
DeleteAwwwww!!! Have they came yet? I know the house we live in now, they don't come. At our old house, they did. I know they like the color red. Maybe put something red around in that area? And, have lots of flowers. I know they love the butterfly bushes. Take Care and Good Luck ;o)
ReplyDeleteNo nothing yet.. I will try putting something red.I have some bushes that are supposed to attract hummingbirds, but no I haven't seen any I know I will one day. I just got to be ready with the camera.. :)
DeleteA little disappointing...not to mention labor intensive. Hope that one fine morning soon you are surprised to find them flittering about at the banquet table.
ReplyDeleteI am waiting Vee... :) every morning I sit by my dining table looking out...:)
DeleteI had the same problem a few weeks ago and then I added more sugar to the recipe. I was doing it 1/4 cup sugar to 1 cup of water, that is the recipe I always used. Now I increased it to 1/3 cup sugar to 1 cup water and they have come back. I have them fighting over the nectar now! I hope you get your hummingbirds soon! can't wait to find out. Hugs
ReplyDeleteOh wow I am using 3 cups of water to 1 cup of sugar.. I need to re look that up....
DeleteThanks so much!!!!!:)

Hummingbirds love it here in the Colorado Rockies. We don't put up feeders because of the bears, who love to pull them down and drink the water. Friends have feeders on their upper decks and get so many of these lovely creatures. They use the very inexpensive red tube-like feeders and that seems to draw the hummers like crazy. They do like the color red. Red flowers attract them, too. I hope you find the answer, Marissa, because hummingbirds are delightful.
ReplyDeletewe only have one pair that i've seen here this year - usually we have a few pair through the summer. i've had trouble with ants as well as squirrels getting to the sugar water, though, so had to hang my feeders from s-hooks up near the house instead of off the eave or in the trees.
ReplyDeletei've also heard others say that the pretty bottles or metal feeders don't get near the attention that the plain old red and yellow plastic models get. not sure about that, but thought i'd mention it. (i keep the red plastic model w/ yellow flowers but that's what the squirrels decided to chew on, too)
Thanks so much.. I am going back to the store to get me the plain red feeder..
DeleteI think that they come through Texas on their way up to cooler climates and maybe when they come back through in the fall you will see them :)
